PromptSharp Finance · free web issueFinance prompt of the day
October 9, 2026 · for Investment banking, sales & trading, equity research, FP&A. One sharp, copy-paste prompt — free, every weekday.
Model integrity / error & formula-audit review
Before a model goes to a VP or IC, you want a structured audit for the errors that quietly corrupt outputs.
You are a modeling reviewer auditing a spreadsheet model I describe or paste (formulas, structure, key outputs). Produce a MODEL-INTEGRITY review covering: 1. STRUCTURAL risks: hardcodes inside formulas, broken/inconsistent references, sign errors, units/period mismatches, and inconsistent time axes. 2. LOGIC checks: does the balance sheet balance, does the cash flow tie to the balance sheet, are there unintended circularities, and are the switches/scenarios wired consistently. 3. A SANITY-CHECK set: the ratios and cross-foots (margins, growth, returns) that should be eyeballed and any that look implausible given what I provided. 4. A PRIORITIZED fix list: the errors most likely to change the output, first. Do not assume a value I did not give you — flag it as unverified. Rules: Do not invent, estimate, or extrapolate any figure — if a number is not in what I give you, write "not provided" and flag it. Mark every claim I should verify externally before relying on it. Never use, infer, or request material non-public information (MNPI) or client-confidential data.
Why it works — Model errors are precision theater — a confident output resting on a hardcode or a broken link; a structured integrity checklist plus balance/tie checks catches the corruptions that no amount of pretty formatting reveals.
Published late. The October 9 run did not go out on the day, so this issue was published on October 15, 2026 with the day's prompt only. The notes on what changed that day were not captured, and we do not fill them in after the fact.

The situation this prompt is built for: Before a model goes to a VP or IC, you want a structured audit for the errors that quietly corrupt outputs. Below is exactly what to feed it and what comes back — no model-specific tricks, it runs the same in any chat AI.
What the model hands back
The prompt forces a fixed deliverable shape, so you get a document, not a ramble:
- STRUCTURAL risks: hardcodes inside formulas, broken/inconsistent references, sign errors, units/period mismatches, and inconsistent time axes.
- LOGIC checks: does the balance sheet balance, does the cash flow tie to the balance sheet, are there unintended circularities, and are the switches/scenarios wired consistently.
- A SANITY-CHECK set: the ratios and cross-foots (margins, growth, returns) that should be eyeballed and any that look implausible given what I provided.
- A PRIORITIZED fix list: the errors most likely to change the output, first. Do not assume a value I did not give you — flag it as unverified.
Why this structure works
Model errors are precision theater — a confident output resting on a hardcode or a broken link; a structured integrity checklist plus balance/tie checks catches the corruptions that no amount of pretty formatting reveals.
On Pro, the audit checklist arrives ordered by your firm's most common model review findings from the profile you set once.
When to use it — and when not to
Reach for it when
- Before a model goes to a VP or IC, you want a structured audit for the errors that quietly corrupt outputs.
- You need the output in a shape you can forward as-is — the fixed structure above is the point.
Skip it when
- You don’t yet have the source material — the prompt is built to refuse to fake it. Its own guardrail: “Do not invent, estimate, or extrapolate any figure — if a number is not in what I give you, write "not provided" and flag it.” With nothing to work from, you’ll get a list of “not provided” flags, which is honest but not useful. Collect the inputs first.
- The task is genuinely one sentence long — a structured prompt earns its overhead when the output has parts. For quick one-off questions, just ask.

Common failure modes (and the fixes)
- Failure: letting the model drift past the prompt’s own guardrail — “Do not invent, estimate, or extrapolate any figure — if a number is not in what I give you, write "not provided" and flag it.” Fix: keep that line in when you edit the prompt; it exists because this is exactly where outputs go wrong without it.
- Failure: letting the model drift past the prompt’s own guardrail — “Mark every claim I should verify externally before relying on it.” Fix: keep that line in when you edit the prompt; it exists because this is exactly where outputs go wrong without it.
- Failure: letting the model drift past the prompt’s own guardrail — “Never use, infer, or request material non-public information (MNPI) or client-confidential data.” Fix: keep that line in when you edit the prompt; it exists because this is exactly where outputs go wrong without it.
- Failure: accepting the first pass. Fix: reply with one line — “now cut everything that is generic to any company and keep only what is specific to mine” — the cheapest quality doubling available.
