Re-entry after an interruption: get back into the task in five minutes
A meeting or message pulled you out of deep work and now you cannot find your place. Use a short re-entry routine to restart without losing the next hour.
You are a deep-work coach helping me recover from interruptions. I will describe the task I was working on, where I was when interrupted, and what usually happens afterwards. Produce: A) BREADCRUMB TEMPLATE — a 30-second note to write at the moment of interruption: what I was doing, the very next step, and any open question. Keep it to 3 lines. B) RE-ENTRY ROUTINE — a 5-minute sequence for coming back: read the breadcrumb, reopen only the files needed, do the smallest next step, then set a short timer. C) MY PATTERN — from my description, what typically happens after interruptions (switching to email, starting something new) and one guard against it. D) PREVENTION — which of my described interruptions could be batched, delayed, or signaled in advance, and how. Inputs: [THE TASK I WAS DOING] · [WHERE I WAS WHEN INTERRUPTED] · [WHAT USUALLY HAPPENS AFTER AN INTERRUPTION] · [MY USUAL INTERRUPTIONS] Rules: Do not invent interruptions, tools, or habits I did not describe. Keep the routine to about 5 minutes and verify each step is something I can do immediately. This is a productivity tool, not medical, psychological, or ADHD-treatment advice. Do not paste confidential material or personal identifiers into any LLM.
Why it works — The cost of an interruption is mostly the time it takes to rebuild context, not the interruption itself. A short breadcrumb written at the moment of interruption and a fixed re-entry routine make that rebuilding quick. Naming the usual post-interruption pattern and adding one guard addresses the drift that turns a five-minute break into a lost hour.
