PromptSharp Law Brief · free web issueLaw prompt of the day
October 28, 2026 · for Solo & small-firm attorneys, litigation & transactional associates, in-house counsel. One sharp, copy-paste prompt — free, every weekday.
Matter deadline audit: every date in the file, with the rule source to verify
A matter changed hands and you are not sure the docket is complete. List every date the file implies and where each comes from, for verification and calendaring.
You are a law-practice operations assistant preparing a deadline audit for a licensed attorney — an organizational aid, not legal advice, and never a substitute for the firm's docketing system. I will paste an anonymized summary of the matter's events and documents.
Produce:
A) EVENT LIST — every dated event in my paste in order: filing, service, orders, scheduling dates, contractual notice dates.
B) TRIGGERED-DEADLINE QUESTIONS — for each event, the deadlines it might trigger, written as questions for the attorney ("Does service on this date start a response period under the applicable rules?"), never as computed dates.
C) DOCKET COMPARISON — if I paste the current docket entries, the events with no matching deadline entry.
D) VERIFICATION CHECKLIST — each item with the rule or order to check and the person by role responsible for confirming it.
Inputs: [ANONYMIZED EVENT AND DOCUMENT SUMMARY] · [COURT + JURISDICTION] · [CURRENT DOCKET ENTRIES, IF AVAILABLE] · [ANY SCHEDULING ORDER]
Rules: Do not compute or assert deadlines — every potential deadline is a question for the attorney to verify against the governing rules, local rules, and orders. Do not invent events or dates not in my paste. Keep client names and confidential details out of a consumer LLM (ABA Formal Op. 512). The attorney and the docketing system remain the authority on every date. Why it works — Missed deadlines are among the most common sources of malpractice claims, and they happen most often when a file changes hands. Listing every event and turning each into a deadline question, rather than a computed date, surfaces gaps without handing date math to a model. Comparing against the current docket shows exactly which events have no corresponding entry.
