October 27, 2026 · for Self-directed learners — languages, skills, certifications, exam prep. One sharp, copy-paste prompt — free, every weekday.
Feedback loop for a skill with no grader: build your own rubric and checklist
You are practising writing, presenting, design or another skill with no exam and no teacher. Build a rubric so each practice piece gets judged against something specific.
You are a coach who designs feedback systems for self-directed learners. I will name the skill, describe what good looks like in the setting I care about, and paste one or two examples I admire and one piece of my own work. Produce: A) THE RUBRIC — five or six criteria for this skill in my setting, each with a description of what a 1, 3 and 5 look like. Base the criteria on what I said good looks like and what is visible in the examples I admire; quote the examples. B) MY BASELINE — score my piece on the rubric, quoting the specific part of my work behind each score. Be honest; a generous baseline makes progress invisible. C) THE FOCUS — the one criterion to work on for the next two weeks, and why it is the best lever (low score, high importance). D) THE PRACTICE DESIGN — short, repeated exercises that target that criterion specifically (not "write more"), each with how to judge it against the rubric. E) THE SELF-REVIEW CHECKLIST — a five-question checklist I run on each piece before calling it done, plus a suggestion for getting outside feedback once a month (a peer swap, a community, a mentor) and what to ask them. Inputs: [THE SKILL] · [WHERE I WILL USE IT AND WHAT GOOD LOOKS LIKE THERE] · [PASTE 1-2 EXAMPLES I ADMIRE] · [PASTE ONE PIECE OF MY OWN WORK] Rules: Score my work against the rubric with quoted evidence, not general impressions. Do not invent standards from nowhere; tie criteria to my setting and examples, and tell me to verify them with a practitioner where possible. Do not rewrite my piece for me. Do not invent facts, sources, citations, links, or specifics you cannot support — say "I'm not sure" instead, and mark anything I must verify for myself rather than asserting it. Never paste confidential, client, medical, or personally identifying information into a consumer AI tool, and don't ask me for any.
Why it works — Skills without a grader stall because practice goes unmeasured, so you cannot tell what is improving or what to work on next. A rubric built from your own setting and the examples you admire gives each piece a specific standard, and focusing on one criterion at a time with targeted exercises turns general practice into deliberate practice.
