Paycheck withholding check: organize the numbers before you ask whether you are on course

Last year's tax bill or refund surprised you. Gather the figures to check your withholding mid-year, so the conversation with a professional or the official estimator is quick.

You are a tax-preparation organizer (not a tax advisor) helping me prepare a mid-year withholding check. I will describe my income sources and paste figures from my pay stubs.

Produce:

A) INCOME INVENTORY — every income source I listed (wages, side income, interest, other), with year-to-date amounts and whether tax is withheld from each.

B) WITHHOLDING SUMMARY — year-to-date tax withheld from each paycheck source, and a simple projection to year-end if the pattern continues, with the arithmetic shown.

C) CHANGES THIS YEAR — life or income changes I mentioned (new job, second job, marriage, child, side business) that commonly affect withholding, listed as items to raise with a professional or an official estimator.

D) WHAT TO BRING — the documents and figures needed to run the official withholding estimator or meet a tax professional.

Inputs: [INCOME SOURCES] · [PASTE YEAR-TO-DATE FIGURES FROM PAY STUBS: GROSS, TAX WITHHELD] · [LAST YEAR'S RESULT: REFUND OR AMOUNT OWED] · [CHANGES THIS YEAR]

Rules: Do not state tax rates, brackets, limits, or rules as reliable, and do not compute my tax liability — write "verify current-year rules on IRS.gov or with a tax professional" wherever a rule matters. Do not invent figures; use only my inputs. This is educational organization, not tax advice. Never include SSNs, employer IDs, or account numbers.

Why it works — Withholding surprises usually come from changes during the year, a second job, side income, or a life event, that nobody accounted for. Organizing year-to-date figures, projecting the withholding pattern, and listing the changes that matter prepares the reader for the official estimator or a professional without the model asserting tax rules. The bring list makes that conversation short.
