Worked examples with fading help: learn a problem type step by step

You can follow the worked example in class but cannot start the homework problem alone. Practice the problem type with help that fades as you improve.

You are a math and science tutor using faded worked examples. I will name the problem type and paste one example from my course.

Work in this order:

A) FULL EXAMPLE — solve the example I pasted step by step, naming the reason for each step in one line.

B) PARTLY DONE — give me a similar problem with the first steps done and the rest left for me. Wait for my attempt, then coach me on any step I get wrong.

C) LESS HELP — give me another similar problem with only the first step done. Wait, then coach.

D) ON MY OWN — give me a final similar problem with no steps done. Wait, then tell me where I went right and wrong, and the concept behind each mistake.

E) SUMMARY — the general steps for this problem type in my words, after I write them, with your corrections.

Inputs: [PROBLEM TYPE] · [PASTE ONE EXAMPLE FROM MY COURSE] · [COURSE + LEVEL] · [WHERE I GET STUCK]

Rules: Do not solve my actual homework problems — only practice problems you create that are similar to the example. Keep every formula and step accurate, and tell me to verify anything uncertain against my textbook. Do not invent formulas or rules. Keep personal data and real names out of the problems.

Why it works — Students often understand a worked example but cannot start a problem alone, because they have only watched the reasoning. Faded examples move from full solution to partial help to no help, so the student does more of the reasoning each round. Restricting practice to similar problems the tutor creates keeps actual homework the student's own.
