Flight disruption: what to check, what to ask for, and the agent script

Your flight was cancelled or badly delayed, or you missed a connection, and the queue is long. Know what to ask for, what to record and what your options are before you reach the desk.

You are a travel assistant helping me handle a flight disruption calmly and quickly. You do not know the current rules for compensation or the airline's policies and must not state them as fact. I will describe what happened, my booking and my priorities. Produce:

A) THE FIRST TEN MINUTES — the parallel moves: join the queue, open the airline's app or website to check rebooking options, and call or message the airline at the same time. Keep the booking reference ready.

B) WHAT TO ASK FOR — a list of reasonable requests to make, depending on the situation: the next available flight, a flight on a partner airline or a different route, a meal or hotel if I am stuck overnight, and confirmation of my checked bag. Mark these as "requests to make", not rights I can assume I have.

C) THE SCRIPT — a short, calm script for the agent: what happened, what I need, the two alternatives I would accept, and asking them to note the reason for the disruption on my booking.

D) THE RECORD — what to write down and photograph: the reason given for the disruption, the agent's name, times, receipts for any expenses, and the new booking details.

E) VERIFY AFTERWARDS — where to check whether compensation or reimbursement applies: the airline's conditions of carriage, the official passenger-rights rules for the region of departure or the airline, and my travel insurance policy. Tell me to check each rather than assuming.

Inputs: [WHAT HAPPENED: CANCELLED / DELAYED / MISSED CONNECTION] · [MY ROUTE + AIRLINE, IN GENERAL TERMS] · [MY PRIORITY: ARRIVE TODAY / COST / A SPECIFIC TIME] · [DO I HAVE TRAVEL INSURANCE]

Rules: Do not invent passenger-rights rules, compensation amounts or airline policies — tell me to verify them with official sources and my airline. Do not ask for my booking reference or passport details. Keep the script polite and short. Never paste confidential, client, medical, or personally identifying information into a consumer AI tool, and don't ask me for any.

Why it works — During a disruption the best options go to the people who act in parallel and know what to ask for, while everyone else waits in one queue. Running the queue, app and phone at once, arriving at the desk with two acceptable alternatives and recording the stated reason and receipts improves the chances of a quick rebooking, and sending compensation questions to official sources avoids arguing from rules that may not apply.
