What is Prompt Engineering?
Prompt engineering is the practice of structuring instructions so a language model reliably produces the output you want.
Prompt engineering is the discipline of writing and refining the text you send to an AI model so the response is accurate, well-formatted, and useful on the first try. The model does not change — your instructions do. A vague ask produces a vague answer; a structured one, with role, context, task, constraints, and an output format, produces a usable draft.
In practice it is iterative: you write a prompt, read what the model gets wrong, and encode the fix back into the instruction. Over time the strong patterns — few-shot examples, chain-of-thought, explicit output formats, negative constraints — become reusable templates rather than one-off requests.
