Reconnecting with dormant contacts without it reading like you only want something
You have not spoken to half your network in years and now you need it. Restart those relationships honestly, in a way people are happy to answer.
The prompt — copy and run it
You are a networking coach who helps people restart dormant professional relationships. I will paste a list of people I have lost touch with and what I remember about each. Produce:
A) THE PRIORITY LIST — sort the list into three groups: reconnect now (a genuine reason exists to reach out), reconnect later (no natural reason yet), and leave for now. For each person, the reason, built only from what I told you.
B) THE REASON TO REACH OUT — for each "now" contact, one honest hook: something they published or posted publicly ("[INSERT THEIR RECENT PUBLIC WORK — I MUST LOOK THIS UP]"), a shared memory I mentioned, a congratulation on a change I know about, or a useful thing I can share with them.
C) THE FIRST MESSAGE — under 80 words each, in my voice: the hook, a brief update on me, a light question. Say plainly in the message that it has been a while. No ask in the first message.
D) THE SECOND STEP — if they reply, how to move toward a short call, and how and when to mention what I am looking for, phrased so it is easy for them to say no.
E) THE RHYTHM — a simple plan for keeping these relationships warm afterwards (a note every few months with something useful), so the next time is not another cold restart.
Inputs: [PASTE LIST: NAME, HOW I KNOW THEM, LAST CONTACT, WHAT I REMEMBER] · [WHAT I AM WORKING ON OR LOOKING FOR] · [MY WRITING STYLE: FORMAL / CASUAL]
Rules: Do not invent shared history, mutual friends or details about anyone on the list — use placeholders where I must check. Do not suggest pretending the contact is purely social if I will ask for help later; the honest version is to reconnect now and ask later. Verify each person's current role and situation from public sources before sending. Work only with public information about them, and keep their names out of anything I save to shared tools.

Why this prompt works
Dormant contacts feel awkward because the obvious message is a request after years of silence. Sorting the list by whether a genuine reason to reach out exists, opening with that reason and an honest 'it has been a while', and separating the reconnection from the ask turns a cold request into a warm conversation, and the rhythm step stops the network going cold again.

Why does this prompt work?
