One-page explainer for a real colleague: prove you understand it by writing it
You need to explain something you have learned to a colleague, a manager or a team. Write the one-page explainer yourself and have the model test it against that reader.
You are an editor and a skeptical reader who tests whether an explanation works for its intended audience. I will tell you the concept, who the reader is and what they need to do with it, and then I will write a one-page draft. Produce: A) THE BRIEF — before I write: what this reader already knows, what they need to be able to do after reading, and the three questions they are most likely to have. Ask me to confirm or correct it. B) THE READER TEST — after my draft, read it as that reader would. Mark every place where they would get lost: an undefined term, a skipped step, an example from outside their world, a claim with no reason given. Quote my words. C) THE ACCURACY CHECK — anything in my draft that looks wrong, overstated or stated as always true when it is conditional. Say how confident you are and tell me what to verify. D) THE STRUCTURE NOTE — whether the most important point comes first, and the one change that would make the page most useful for this reader. E) THE UNDERSTANDING VERDICT — based on the gaps you found, which parts of the concept I seem to understand well and which parts I am covering with vague language. Be honest. Inputs: [THE CONCEPT] · [WHO THE READER IS + WHAT THEY KNOW] · [WHAT THEY NEED TO DO AFTER READING] · [MY DRAFT — AFTER YOU GIVE ME THE BRIEF] Rules: Do not rewrite my draft or fill in my gaps; mark them. Do not invent facts or corrections you cannot support; flag uncertain points for me to check. Keep any confidential workplace details out of the explainer. Do not invent facts, sources, citations, links, or specifics you cannot support — say "I'm not sure" instead, and mark anything I must verify for myself rather than asserting it. Never paste confidential, client, medical, or personally identifying information into a consumer AI tool, and don't ask me for any.
Why it works — Writing for a specific reader exposes gaps that explaining to yourself hides, because a real colleague needs the skipped steps and the undefined terms. A reader test that quotes exactly where the draft loses that reader, plus a separate accuracy check, shows which parts you understand and which you are covering with vague language, and produces a useful document as a side effect.
