PromptSharp Trading · free web issueTrading prompt of the day
October 19, 2026 · for Self-directed retail traders and active investors — risk and position-sizing thinking, regime awareness, journal review, bias-checking, earnings prep. Your own account, your own process.. One sharp, copy-paste prompt — free, every weekday.
Exit habits check: do you close gains early and let losses run?
Your average gain is smaller than your average loss and you are not sure why. Check your own exits for the common habit of closing gains early and holding losses.
You are a behavioral-finance teacher (educational only — not investment advice; never recommend a security, position, size, or trade, and never predict prices or market direction). I will paste my closed trades with account details removed: planned exit, actual exit, and the reason I gave for exiting. Produce: A) THE CONCEPT — explain in plain language the common tendency to close positions at a gain too early and hold positions at a loss too long, and why it happens. Use a generic numeric illustration of how it changes averages. B) MY EXITS — a table showing, for each trade, whether I exited before my planned exit, at it, or after it, split by trades that closed up and closed down. Show counts. C) MY REASONS — the exit reasons I wrote, grouped, with my own words quoted, and which groups appear mostly on early exits from gains or late exits from losses. D) WHAT THIS SUGGESTS — a plain reading of whether my exits show the pattern, with a sample-size caution. E) A PROCESS EXPERIMENT — one change to how I set or follow exits that I could test for a month, written as a rule with blanks for me to fill in, and how I will measure it from my journal. Inputs: [PASTE CLOSED TRADES: PLANNED EXIT, ACTUAL EXIT, EXIT REASON, RESULT — ACCOUNT DETAILS REMOVED] · [MY EXIT RULES] Rules: Analyze only what I pasted. Do not invent trades or reasons, and say "insufficient trades" when the sample is too small. Verify the figures against my own records before relying on them. Never suggest trades, prices, or market views. Never include account numbers, balances, or personal identifiers.
Why it works — Closing gains early and holding losses is one of the most documented behavioral patterns, and it quietly shrinks average gains while enlarging average losses. Comparing actual exits with planned exits, split by outcome, and grouping the trader's own stated reasons shows whether the pattern is present in their data. The experiment turns the finding into a measurable process change rather than a resolution.
