What is Role Prompting?
Role prompting tells the model to adopt a specific persona or expertise ('act as a tax attorney') to shape its answer.
Role prompting assigns the model an identity or expertise — 'You are a senior financial analyst,' 'Act as a copy editor' — so its vocabulary, depth, and priorities match that role. It's a fast way to raise the register and focus of an answer.
It shapes style and framing but does not add real credentials or verified facts. A model told it's a lawyer still isn't one; treat its output as a structured draft to verify, not authoritative advice.
Frequently asked
Does telling the AI to 'act as an expert' make it more accurate?
It improves relevance, vocabulary, and framing, and can surface considerations a generic answer misses. It does NOT add real expertise or verified facts — always check claims against a trusted source.
