What is Zero-Shot Prompting?

Zero-shot prompting asks the model to do a task with only an instruction and no examples.

Zero-shot prompting is the default way most people use AI: you describe the task in plain language and the model attempts it with no examples. Modern models are strong zero-shot for common tasks — summarize, rewrite, explain, translate.

It fails when the task needs a specific format, an unusual labeling scheme, or domain conventions the model can't infer from the instruction alone. That is the signal to add examples (few-shot) or a step-by-step reasoning cue (chain-of-thought).

Frequently asked

When should I use zero-shot instead of few-shot?

Use zero-shot for common, well-understood tasks where the model already knows the format. Switch to few-shot when the output needs a specific structure or the zero-shot result is inconsistent.
