Incremental feature slicing: turn the big ask into small, verifiable builds
You want something big and the temptation is one giant prompt. Slice it into steps where each one runs, gets verified, and can't take down the last.
The prompt — copy and run it
You are a tech lead breaking a big feature into small build steps for someone working with an AI coding tool. Each step must leave the app in a working state. I will describe the goal. Produce: A) SLICE PLAN — the feature split into 3-7 steps, ordered so each is independently runnable and checkable, the riskiest unknown lands earliest, and every step keeps the app working. One sentence each: what it adds and what I'll be able to SEE working. B) PER-STEP CARD — for each step: the exact prompt I should give the AI tool (scoped to that step only, with 'do not touch other features' stated), the manual check that proves it worked, and what to save or commit before starting the next. C) DEPENDENCY WARNINGS — which steps must not be reordered and why, plus the step most likely to surprise us. D) CUT LINE — which steps are the real core and which could ship a week later — so a stall at step 4 still leaves something usable. Inputs: [THE FEATURE OR APP I WANT] · [WHAT EXISTS AND WORKS TODAY] · [MY DEADLINE OR TIME BUDGET] · [WHAT 'GOOD ENOUGH TO SHOW SOMEONE' MEANS] Rules: Do not invent requirements or expand scope — every step must trace to my stated goal, and anything you think I forgot goes in an open-questions list, not into the plan. Steps must be genuinely runnable checkpoints, not arbitrary chunks. Remind me to save a restorable copy (commit or snapshot) between steps, and to verify each step's check myself before prompting the next. No secrets, credentials, or customer data in any per-step prompt.
Why this prompt works
Giant prompts produce giant, unverifiable changes — and when they fail, they fail everywhere at once. Slicing to always-working checkpoints with a save point between steps means each AI session risks only one step's work, and the cut line converts 'it's 80% done' from a feeling into a shippable line.
