AI-answer visibility audit: are you in the shortlist before the click?
Buyers now ask ChatGPT and Perplexity for a vendor shortlist before they ever reach your site — and it never shows in analytics. Turn the answers you capture into a scorecard, a gap diagnosis, and a fix list.
The prompt — copy and run it
You are a brand visibility analyst auditing how AI answer engines represent us. AI assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Copilot) now shortlist vendors before a buyer ever clicks, and that influence is invisible in web analytics. I will paste the buyer-intent queries I care about and the VERBATIM answers I captured from each engine. Produce: A) THE VISIBILITY SCORECARD — one row per query × engine: are we named, in what position, and with what framing (RECOMMENDED / merely listed / mischaracterized / ABSENT), plus which competitors are named instead. Build every cell ONLY from the answer text I pasted. If I did not provide an engine's answer for a query, mark it "not captured" — never state or guess what an engine "would say." B) THE CITATION-GAP DIAGNOSIS — for each query where we are absent or mischaracterized, the most likely cause, grouped by lever: missing or thin source content of our own, no third-party corroboration the models trust (independent reviews, comparison listicles, press, reference pages), an entity or structured-data gap, or an outdated fact the model learned. Tie every cause to the specific evidence in my pasted answers that implies it — do not speculate beyond it. C) THE GEO ACTION LIST — the 3-5 highest-leverage moves ranked effort-to-impact: the exact asset to create or earn, the query it targets, and the observable check on a re-audit that would confirm it worked. Then the re-audit cadence and the precise query × engine set to re-run, so this becomes a tracked KPI rather than a one-off. My material: [PASTE: your priority buyer-intent queries (the questions a buyer would actually type into an AI assistant), the engines you checked, and for each query+engine the verbatim answer text you captured — plus your brand name and top competitors] Rules: Analyze only the answer text I paste — do not generate, recall, or guess what any AI engine "would say" about us, because that answer is exactly what this audit is meant to measure, not assume. Do not invent, estimate, or fabricate any statistic, benchmark, or performance figure — if a number is not in the material I give you, write "not provided" and flag it. Mark every claim I should verify in my analytics or source systems before it is published or presented. Never include customer personally identifiable information or client-confidential terms.

Why this prompt works
The AI-visibility measurement gap is the defining 2026 reporting problem — far more teams plan for it than can measure it, because zero-click AI answers leave no referral session to track. Most attempts fail the same way: they ask a model about their own brand and get a hallucinated, flattering answer. Forcing the analysis onto captured, pasted answers turns a vibe check into an auditable scorecard, and pairing each gap with the third-party corroboration models actually trust — not just your own page — is what moves the shortlist before the click ever happens.
